A Fire That Crossed Continents

1500s

Birth of the Bird's Eye Chili

Portuguese explorers discovered the African bird's eye chili — piri piri in Swahili — growing wild across Mozambique and Angola.

1600s

The Marinade Was Born

Settlers blended the fiery chili with lemon, garlic, herbs and oil, creating the peri-peri sauce that would define a cuisine.
